Answer: This is a known issue with EndNote X1 for Windows. This issue simply prevents you from putting your cursor directly into the "Reference Type" field. If you put your cursor in the author field right below this, it will function normally. Note that once the cursor is in the "Author" field, you can then hit the "UP" arrow on the keyboard to move to the "Reference Type" field, and then edit it normally.
