Install 23: How do I configure EndNote to work with RefViz?

Answer: You can send references directly from EndNote 7 and later for Windows to RefViz for analysis. This function requires a one-time configuration step described below.
  1. Close completely out of the EndNote program.

  2. Navigate to your EndNote folder in Windows Explorer.

The default installation location for EndNote is:
    C:\Program Files\EndNote

  3. Double click the following file and walk through the set-up wizard:

EndNote 9 and later Configure Data Visualization.exe
EndNote 8 Configure DataViz.exe
EndNote 7 Configure Omniviz.exe

  1. The wizard will request the location of your RefViz application. Use the Browse button to indicate the location of your refviz.exe file.

The default installation location for RefViz is:
    C:\Program Files\RefViz\refviz.exe

  2. Highlight the refviz.exe file in your RefViz home directory and click Open in the browser window. Click Next and then Finish to complete the configuration process.

  3. In EndNote choose the references you wish to export and choose Data Visualization from the EndNote Tools menu.

  4. RefViz will launch, import references, and create a View from the references.

For all Macintosh versions of EndNote, as well as earlier versions of EndNote for Windows, you can export the references in the RIS format and import them into RefViz:

  1. Export the EndNote library to a plain text file (.txt) using the RefMan (RIS) Export format:

    1. Open the library in EndNote and make sure all references are showing.
    2. Select "RefMan (RIS) Export" as the output style.

    3. Select File / Export..., enter a file name, and save the file to a convenient location such as your desktop.

  2. Import the RefMan (RIS) Export text file into RefViz:

    1. In RefViz, go to "File > New View".

    2. Select the text file you just created.

    3. Give the new view a name and click OK to complete the process.
