When I open Microsoft Word I get an error message, "The macro cannot
be found or has been disabled because of your macro security settings",
and the EndNote tools do not work. How can I fix this? |
Answer:
For X1/X2 Windows users, this message may appear if the EndNote tools are disabled in Word.
Word 2007:
- Click on the Office icon and select "Word Options."
- Click on "Add-ins."
- Change the "Manage" options to "Disabled Items."
- Click Go.
- Highlight any EndNote item(s) and click "Enable."
- Click OK.
Word 2000/2002/2003:
- Click the "Help menu" and select "About Microsoft Office Word."
- Click "Disabled Items."
- Highlight any EndNote item(s) and click "Enable."
- Click Close.
- Click OK.
If you are still having problems, try the following:
If you get this error message when you click on the EndNote tools
in Word, then most likely one of the two EndNote Cite While You Write
(CWYW) files is not loading properly when Word starts.
-
Please open the Templates and Addins window by following the appropriate instructions:
Word 2007: Go to the Office button and choose Word Options. Select Add-Ins from the list on the left. At the bottom of the page, next to "Manage:" set the Drop down to "Word Add-ins" and click Go.
Word 2000/XP/2003: Go to "Tools / Templates and Add-ins."
- You should see EndNote files
listed under "Global Templates and Add-ins", and the listed file(s) should
be checked. The files you should see here vary depending on what version
of EndNote and Word you are using:
- EndNote X1/X2
- Word 2007:
- EndNote Cwyw.dotm
- Word 2000/XP/2003:
- EndNote Cwyw.dot
- EndNote X
- Word XP/2003/2007:
- EN10CWYW.dot
- EN10Cwyw.WordXP.wll
- Word 2000:

- Word 2000:

- EndNote 7
- Word XP/2003/2007:
- EN7CWYW.dot
- EN7Cwyw.WordXP.wll
- Word 97/2000:
- EN7CWYW.dot
- EN7Cwyw.wll
- EndNote 6
- All supported versions of Word:
- EN6CWYW.dot

- EndNote 5
- All supported versions of Word:

If
any of these file(s) are unchecked, check it, and click OK. If Word
returns a macro security warning, check the box for "always trust
macros from this source" and then "Enable macros." Close Word, and
then start Word again. The EndNote commands in the Tools menu should
be functional. If you go back to "Tools…Templates and Add-ins",
the file(s) should appear and remain checked.
If you are still having problems with this after verifying these CWYW files are checked, please do the following:-
If using EndNote 7, make sure you are using the latest EndNote 7 Document Template available here.
-
In Word (97/2000/XP and 2003 only), go to Tools menu, select Macro then choose the Security submenu. Click on the Trusted Sources tab. Verify that the check box for "Trust all add-ins and templates" is checked.
-
On Windows 2000 or XP systems, Word needs these CWYW files to be located in
C:\Documents and Settings\your login\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
On a Vista system, Word needs these CWYW files to be located in
C:\Users\your login\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup
If they are in a different path, you will get this error. Use the manual installation instructions here. -
If you are still having problems, it is possible that Anti-Virus software was running when EndNote was installed. Disable Anti-Virus software and reinstall EndNote.
***
NOTE:
If you have Word XP or later and "EN6Cwyw.WordXP.wll" is present and checked,
please go here and follow the instructions
to avoid a known Word XP memory leak problem.
