CWYW 18: I've made changes to the references in my library, but those changes aren't reflected in my document. How can I correct this?

Answer: First, try to format the bibliography in the document. This may resolve the problem.

Each formatted citation in your Word document contains hidden field codes that have all the information about that reference. This embedded reference information is also known as a "Traveling Library." If you don't have your library open in EndNote, or if someone gave you only the Word document without the library, then the EndNote program will use the Traveling Library to format the references.

To have EndNote pick up the changes you've made to the references, you'll want to first make a backup of your document.

Word 2007 with Endnote X1/X2: Go to the EndNote tab and choose the "Convert Citations and Bibliography > Convert to Unformatted Citations" command.

Word 2007 with Endnote X and earlier: Go to the Add-Ins tab and choose the "EndNote > Unformat Citations" command.

Word X/2000/2002 (XP)/2003/2004/20008: Go to the Tools Menu and select "EndNote > Unformat Citations" command.

This will remove the reference list and revert the citations. This should revert all the citations into the temporary citation format and remove the reference list from the end of the document. At this point, save your document and close completely out of Word (and Outlook, if open). If you now open the document and format the document, EndNote will pick up the reference information from your open library or libraries, and the changes will be picked up.

Please note that you may get the "EndNote Select Matching Reference" dialog box when formatting the bibliography. This may be because you have modified the author name or the year in one of the references. Please click here for information on how to resolve this.
