New features in EndNote Plus 2.0.5 include:
- Microsoft Word 7 compatibility
- A Show Record Numbers command to display record numbers in the
Library window
- A fix for a Windows 95 video driver conflict
- The ability to add prefixes to in-text citations.
More information about these features is listed at the end of the document. This
patch is also available on disk for a nominal handling charge.
The latest version of EndNote (version 3) includes all of the
improvements of 2.0.5 plus an Add-in for Microsoft Word 6, 7 and
97 and WordPerfect 6.1, 7 and 8 as well as built-in Reference
Manager (r) conversion utilities that make converting your Reference
Manager databases (version 7 or earlier) a breeze.
Download this patch if:
- You now have EndNote Plus 2.0.0.0 - 2.0.1.3 and do not want to upgrade to 3
with the EndNote Add-in. (To see what version you are running, choose "About
EndNote Plus" from EndNote's "Help" menu.)
- You have been instructed to do so by our technical support staff. This patch
has some minor bug fixes.
It is unnecessary to download the patch if you have 2.1.0.0 or a later version
already installed on your machine.
If you plan to upgrade to 3, you may still download and use the patched version
(2.0.5) until 3 arrives.
Instructions
To use the patch:
1- Download ENUPDT50.EXE to your hard disk. If you are downloading this file with
a standard FTP client, be sure to set the transfer mode to binary before starting
the download.
2- Run the patch. If you use Windows 3.1 or Windows NT, run ENUPDT50.EXE by
double-clicking the file in the File Manager. If you use Windows 95, double-click
the file in an explorer window.
The patching program will ask you to locate your current copy of EndNote Plus.
This is assumed to be in C:\ENDNOTE2 by default. Change drives or directories if
you have installed EndNote in a different location.
The patch program will update your copy of EndNote to version 2.0.5.0, and save a
backup of your old version in a directory called \backup. If you encounter any
trouble with the patching program, please contact Niles Software for
assistance.
New Features Since EndNote Plus 2.0
*** Show Record Numbers ***
To see the record numbers of each reference
in the library, select "Show Record Numbers" from the Edit menu. Once selected,
this option changes to "Hide Record Numbers."
*** Citation Prefix ***
In earlier versions of EndNote, you could append a suffix to an in-text citation.
Now you can append a prefix as well.
A prefix may be typed in front of any unformatted in-text citation using a
backslash to separate the prefix text from the reference. For example, to add a
prefix to this citation, [Hall,1988 #77], type the prefix text after the first
bracket followed by a backslash:
[see also \Hall,1988 #77]
This citation formatted in the APA style would be:
(see also Hall, 1988)
When there is only one prefix in a multiple citation and it is at the beginning of
the citation, it will stay there regardless of how the citations are sorted. For
example, this citation
[e.g. \Hall,1988 #77; Argus, 1984 #11]
after being formatted in the APA style will appear as:
(e.g. Argus, 1984; Hall, 1988)
If the prefix is not at the beginning of the multiple citation, or if there is
more than one prefix in a multiple citation, the prefix text will remain with the
reference it precedes. For example, this citation
[Argus, 1984 #11; especially \Hall,1988 #77]
formatted in the Author-Date style will be:
(Argus 1984; especially Hall 1988)
Changing the Citation Prefix Marker
You can change the prefix marker from
a backslash to another character by choosing "Citation Markers" from the Edit
menu. Use a character that is not otherwise used in the citations. Letters,
numbers, semicolons, and commas cannot be prefix markers.
Including Semicolons or Prefix Markers in a
Citation Prefix or Suffix
In order to include a semicolon or the citation prefix marker (\) as part of a
citation prefix or suffix, type a back-apostrophe (`) before the character. The
back-apostrophe tells EndNote Plus to treat the following character as regular
text, and not as a significant character for parsing the citation. For example, to
create a citation that is formatted with a semicolon in the prefix, such as "(see
Figure 1; Jackson, 1994)" the unformatted citation must look like this: [see
Figure 1`; \Jackson, 1994 #28]. The ` character before the semicolon tells EndNote
Plus not to treat the semicolon as a separator between citations - the ` character
will not be included in the final formatted citation.
*** Windows 95 Common Dialogs ***
EndNote 2.0.5 now supports the standard Windows 95 File Open, File Save, File Save
As, and Font dialogs. Shortcuts to files and directories are supported in the File
dialogs.
*** Bug fixes ***
- Improved support for Western European non-US keyboards (Hebrew, Arabic, and
Far East keyboards may not work correctly).
- Fixed "blue screen" crash in Windows 95 that occurred with some accelerated
display drivers.
- Fixed file deletion bug that occurred when used with some NFS network clients.
About the EndNote 3 Add-in
The EndNote Add-in for Microsoft Word is an extension to Word for Windows 6, 7 and 97 and WordPerfect 6.1, 7 and 8. The
Add-In communicates with the EndNote program to add several enhancements to
EndNote's formatting abilities that are not available with the program alone:
- EndNote's commands are integrated with the word processor's menus.
- The EndNote Add-in creates the bibliography within an existing document,
rather than generating a separate document.
- Bibliographies can be generated from references in multiple libraries.
- Footnotes and endnotes can be formatted as either short citations or as full
