Mac:
Note EndNote X1 Download customers: You may have downloaded your copy of EndNote X1 for Mac via an online store.
If not, please download the
EndNote X1 installer
file before proceeding.
EndNote X1/X2 OS X Install steps
To distribute multiple copies of EndNote in accordance with a
volume site license agreement, an administrator must first create
a redistributable disk image of EndNote.
First, the administrator creates a redistributable file:
- Open the EndNoteX1Installer.dmg or EndNoteX2Installer.dmg file.
- Do not drag the EndNote X1/X2 folder to your hard disk;
instead, immediately double click on the folder.
- Run the EndNote X1/x2 file.
- On the Volume/Site License Registration page, enter the
Licensee information and your volume Product Key. You
must also accept the terms of the volume license agreement.
- Click Next. Please wait while the installer creates a new disk image titled:
EndNote X1 Site Installer.dmg or EndNote X2 Site Installer.dmg
- Unmount (drag to the Trash) any EndNote disk image other
than the EndNote X1 Site Installer.dmg or EndNote X2 Site Installer.dmg.
- Distribute the EndNote X1 Site Installer.dmg or EndNote X2 Site Installer.dmg file to your end
users.
For other options for deploying the network version, see the
"Using EndNote on the Network"
chapter of the EndNote manual.
Windows:
You must run the MSI installer in Administrative Mode in order
to enter your EndNote X1/X2 volume license product key.
Recommended easy installation:
EndNote X1/X2 downloaded installer
EndNote X1.0.1/X2 CD
EndNote X1.0.1/X2 CD easy deployment steps:
- Insert the X1.0.1/X2 Install CD.
- When the Autorun launches (if you have disabled Autorun, open the CD and choose "Autorun.exe"), choose "Install Volume" from the list.
-
When prompted, enter your EndNote volume license
product key.
Do not select the option titled "Perform Administrative
Installation."
When the installation is complete, you will find a license.dat file in the target
directory, and a ENX1Inst.msi or an ENX2inst.msi depending on the version you installed. -
Deploy the MSI (ENX1Inst.msi or ENX2inst.msi) and the license.dat together.
You can deploy in any way you want, but make sure the two
files are in the same directory when executed. You could zip
the two files to distribute them to end users, you could create
a Group Policy deployment where both files are delivered to
the same location on the target machine, or you could simply
drop the two files in a shared network location from which
users execute the installer.
Note: If EndNote is distributed on a CD or other removable media, your users will need a copy of the CD when applying patches.
- (Optional) For each additional user account on a computer,
log in (administrative rights are not necessary), go to the
Start menu, look under All Programs>EndNote and run
Configure EndNote to configure Palm OS support for the current user. You must do this if you
want to use this EndNote feature.
EndNote X1/X2 downloaded installer easy deployment steps:
- Open a command line (Start Menu, Run, type "cmd" and click ok). Browse to the
location where the ENX1Inst.msi file is located. On the install CD, this is D:\MSI.
- Run the installer in Admin mode (/a on the command line):
EndNote X1
msiexec /a ENX1Inst.msi
EndNote X2
msiexec /a ENX2Inst.msi
-
When prompted, enter your EndNote volume license
product key.
Do not select the option titled "Perform Administrative
Installation."
When the installation is complete, you will find a license.dat file in the target
directory. -
Copy the ENX1Inst.msi to the same directory as the license.dat file
-
Deploy ENX1Inst.msi and license.dat together.
Note: If EndNote is distributed on a CD or other removable media,
your users will need a copy of the CD when applying patches.
- (Optional) For each additional user account on the
computer, log in (administrative rights are not necessary), go
to the Start menu, look under All Programs>EndNote and run
Configure EndNote to configure Palm OS support. You must do this if you want to use this
EndNote feature.
Using the EndNote X1 volume installer to install on an individual
computer:
EndNote X1/X2 downloaded installer
EndNote X1.0.1/X2 CD
EndNote X1/X2 downloaded installer individual install steps:
- Open a command line (Start Menu, Run, type "cmd" and click ok). Browse to the

EndNote X1
msiexec /a ENX1Inst.msi
EndNote X2
msiexec /a ENX2Inst.msi
-
When prompted, enter your EndNote volume license
product key.
Do not select the option titled "Perform Administrative

When the installation is complete, you will find a license.dat file in the target
directory. -

-
Distribute both the ENX1Inst.msi and license.dat file to the
user. For example, you can copy them to a shared network
drive or a CD.
Note: If EndNote is distributed on a CD or other removable media, your users will need a copy of the CD when applying patches.
-
The user should then copy the two files, ENX1Inst.msi and
license.dat to the same folder on their individual
computer.
- The user should log on to the computer with administrative
rights, and then run ENX1Inst.msi to install the EndNote
program. (Do not run in Admin mode this time.)
- (Optional) For each additional user account on the
computer, log in (administrative rights are not necessary), go

-
Distribute both the MSI (ENX1Inst.msi or ENX2Inst.msi) and the license.dat file to the
user. For example, you can copy them to a shared network
drive or a CD.
Note: If EndNote is distributed on a CD or other removable media, your users will need a copy of the CD when applying patches.
-
The user should then copy the two files, the MSI (ENX1Inst.msi or ENX2Inst.msi) and the license.dat to the same folder on their individual
computer.
- The user should log on to the computer with administrative
rights, and then run the MSI (ENX1Inst.msi or ENX2Inst.msi) to install the EndNote
program. (Do not run in Admin mode this time.)
- (Optional) For each additional user account on the
computer, log in (administrative rights are not necessary), go
to the Start menu, look under All Programs>EndNote and run
Configure EndNote Palm OS support. You must do this if you want to use this
EndNote feature.
For other options for deploying the network version for EndNote X1, see the
"Using EndNote on the Network"
chapter of the EndNote X1 manual.
For other options for deploying the network version for EndNote X2, see the
"Network and Volume Installations"
chapter of the EndNote X2 manual.
Windows X1.0.1 Patch:
If a user has installed EndNote X1 from a deployed CD with the ENX1Inst.msi and
license.dat files, note they will need this CD when installing any patches or updates.
If that is not possible, note you can use the steps
here to clear the MSI data and reinstall and then apply the patch.
