EndNote X1- Library Crashing Issue

We have identified a specific issue with Windows EndNote X1 where attempting to open a library causes EndNote X1 to crash.

This issue should be addressed by doing the following:
  1. Get the EndNote X1.0.1 patch. You can install this update within EndNote by selecting menus - Help > EndNote Program Updates... or by running Update EndNote from the Windows Start menu.

The update is also available here.

  2. Once you have installed the patch you need one additional file. This can be found here.

  3. "Unzip" the libmysqld.dll file by right-clicking on it and selecting "Extract Here."

  4. Place the libmysqld.dll file in "C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\", overwriting any files already present in this location.

  5. Start EndNote and open a library.

If you cannot install this for any reason, you may try the following workaround involving clearing temporary files.

Note: While you can clear your temporary files, the third party program may create the same problem file after you use that third party program. You would need to do the steps below again to clear the error.
  1. Quit all open programs

  2. Open "Computer" on Vista, and "My Computer" on XP/2000. Click on the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. Go to the View tab, and select the option to “Show Hidden Files and Folders.” Click OK. If you do not see the "Tools" menu on Vista, hold down the "ALT" key.

  3. Browse your temporary folder location.

    Vista:
    C:\Users\*USERNAME*\AppData\Local\Temp

    XP/2000:
    C:\Documents and Settings\*USERNAME*\Local Settings\Temp

  4. Click the View menu and select Details.

  5. Click the Date Modified header to sort. Scroll through the files, looking carefully at the dates. If you see any that are missing dates, delete them. Also delete any with unusual or impossible dates; for example, a date with a year of 1969.

Note: If some files cannot be removed, please restart your computer and repeat the steps above.

  6. Open an EndNote library.
