We work in molecular biology projects at the "Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology", Cordoba University, Spain, European Union. We carry out different research projects, involving the cloning, sequencing and expression of genes. We work with microorganisms, plants and animals. Our subjects go from biotechnology or the debittering of citrus juice (orange, for instance) to animal paternity testing (who is the father of this goat ?). We also work on plant breeding with wheat-barley hybrids, olive trees or strawberry biotechnology projects to make them stand longer periods without softening/ruining after recollection/ripening. Other projects deal with the detection of mutagenic/carcinogenic substances and with the development of early warning biomarkers for environmental pollution. I could go into much more details, yet I think that is more than enough to give an idea of the different subjects in which we work and the heavy work involved.

And to do our research and be up to date we need to manage bibliography. A lot of bibliography, indeed! And that is where the great EndNote and the fantastic Mac came to the rescue...

It was a long time ago that we started using EndNote. At that time it was only available for Mac. We tested many other alternatives, like Book Ends Pro, Pro Cite or Reference Manager, yet none was as intuitive, flexible and powerful as EndNote. What we liked most was the ease of use. That, coupled with the Mac interface gave us the perfect bibliographic productivity combo. The team EndNote and the Mac was simply second to none in the whole computing market.

At those early days we used to type our references directly into EndNote. Then we started using Current Contents Life, later on Current Contents Life with Abstracts and it was really great to be able to export/import search results from/to CC/EndNote on the Mac.

We later moved the the Apple A/UX Unix platform with the Apple Workgroup Server 95. We worked with Current Contents Life with Abstracts and eventually moved to the much more comprehensive SCI Life. It was great to search a full year, export and import results into EndNote.

Later on, the internet and the iMac changed all for the better. We now search all years available of SCI (1992 to 1999) from Netscape Communicator 4.61/99, just browsing to http://www.cica.es. Then, with the magic of Citrix ICA client for Mac, we can do the search from our iMacs in a snap. Save file to our iMac hard disk and then import them directly into EndNote. The time savings are tremendous. We also link directly from EndNote to MedLine at PubMed, perform searches and include them directly into the active EndNote window. This is simply fantastic. Top marks to the Mac team of EndNote programmers !!!
