Discontinuation of the BIDS-ISI service in the UK higher education community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As you may know, the BIDS-ISI service to the UK higher education community will be replaced by the MIMAS-Web of Science service on 31 July 2000. This means that the BIDS-ISI database and related services will no longer be accessible after that date. The ISI Citation Index databases, of which the BIDS-ISI service consisted, are now available to the UK HE community through an agreement with CHEST and MIMAS (Manchester University Computing) under the Web of Science ¨ interface. For more information about access to this service please consult the CHEST web site at www.chest.ac.uk.

z39.50 connection Users of ISI ResearchSoft¨ products Reference Manager¨, EndNote¨ and ProCite¨ using the z39.50 connection to BIDS-ISI to carry out bibliographic searching from within their software program will no longer be able to do so after 31 July 2000. The z39.50 version of the database was developed and provided by BIDS and will therefore cease at the same time as the BIDS-ISI service. However, subscribers to the MIMAS-Web of Science service are now able to conduct searches of the same data under the Web of Science interface, which allows for more powerful bibliographic searching and citation navigation. The new one-click exporting function from the Web of Science enables users of ISI ResearchSoft products to download instantly their selected references into Reference Manager, EndNote or ProCite. This feature is proving to be very popular amongst users who have already made the switch from the BIDS to the MIMAS service. This and other powerful features of the Web of Science should more than compensate for the loss of the z39.50 function.

The MIMAS-Web of Science service gives access to the Science Citation Index Expanded, the Social Sciences Citation Index¨ and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index¨ from 1981, as well as to the Web of Science¨ Proceedings (Scientific and Technical) from 1990. Additional services available include the ISI Journal Citation Reports¨ Science and Social Sciences editions.
